About Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy harnesses the potent pure essences of flowers, plants and trees, working on the powerful senses of smell and touch, to balance and heal. The use of essential oils and aromatic substances is one of the oldest methods of holistic healing known to man.

Aromatherapy is a modern term for an ancient art. Historical records dating back to 4500 BC and many more thereafter, describe the use of oils for spiritual, ritual, cosmetic and medicinal purposes. This fine art is again growing in popularity as we return to a holistic approach that recognises natural skin care and beauty rituals as well as the importance of honouring Mind, Body & Spirit to optimise health and our human potential.

Aromatherapy is widely used for its healing qualities and powerful effects on emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. It is interesting to note that historically the spiritual and ritual use of aromas has been ever present. Ritual practises of all traditions use scent, smudging and/or incense to cleanse and invoke a sacred space.

The Native Americans used white sage to burn in cleansing rituals and to call in the elements to open a ceremony. Other dried herbs and aromatic substances were added to the fire as the ceremony continued. Ancient shamanic rituals involve the use of aromas to define ceremony and call in the elements and spirit, and use oils and herbs to invoke certain magical qualities. In Hindu temples around the world, incense and fragrant flowers are offered in honour of Gods and Goddesses or higher aspects of our Self. In fact, many spiritual traditions still use incense and oils to cleanse negativity and create a space for prayer. The high priestess and beloved of Jesus, Mary Magdalene has been known as the lady with the alabaster jar, as she kept exquisite healing oils for ritual purposes and we have biblical reference of her anointing the feet of Jesus. Her path corresponds to the ancient Egyptians, worshippers of the goddess Isis, whose practise and study into the Art of Aromatherapy Ritual paved the way for much of our inspiration today.

At Byron Essence we value the practical application of essential oils to address all manner of physical, emotional and mental dis-eases. Proven to be successful in treating many imbalances from depression to a chest infection, we recommend consulting a professional Aromatherapist or other health professionals for any well being concerns.
